Three Storms and a Pandemic: A Note from Cox President Ken Mills









Hello from Cox Roofing! First, I’d like to say thank you for trusting Cox Roofing with your roof. It’s a privilege to serve families in the Ozarks, and we’re grateful you chose us. Second, I want to thank you for your patience as we schedule your roof. I thought some insight to our current protocols might be helpful and put your mind at ease.

For many reasons, 2020 has been a challenge for Cox Roofing. COVID-19 slowed down our production in the spring, and now, COVID is impacting our manufacturing and shipping. Certain roofing accessories are in short supply, and even shingles are not all readily available, a rarity in our industry. The shingle shortage causes some projects’ delay, only because the color of a shingle is on back order. When that happens, the manufacturer only gives us a window of time — but nothing certain.

We also were blown over by community demand this spring. Beginning May 3, we had three large hail storms within a 10-day period that created more damage in the Ozarks than we have seen in a season in over 30 years. We are fully staffed, but we cannot keep up with the amount of calls we have received in the past three months. Our service to our customers has been less than we strive for because of this. We refuse to substitute quality of work for quantity of jobs, so it will take longer than normal to get a roof done and even get a return phone call. For the first time in this company’s 40-year history, we had to just recently stop taking new customers or roofs: Our focus is to take care of the existing customers to the best of our ability

To do that, we’re correcting and clarifying our process to you. If your estimator gave you a time frame initially, due to overwhelming demand, our commitments made are going to fall short. But don’t worry: roofs only need immediate repairs if you have a leak or a specific damage issue identified by your estimator. The biggest misconception in roofing is that after a hailstorm you should rush to get it done when it normally just shortens the life of your roof. Most of the time, this is false – and most of the time, it’s stormchasers or contractors trying to sell work using fear as a motivator.

We appreciate your patience as we walk through this season together. I will be sending out a What’s Next letter explaining the steps between signing a contract all the way to your final bill.
